TATA STEELWORKS PORT TALBOT

Documenting an Industrial Giant

I first visited the works in Port Talbot back in 2019, however this long planned visit was a return to see things in more detail. The site is so huge, that we didn’t manage to cover all we intended to, so hopefully I will be returning again. There is lots of uncertainty around the future of many of the assets on site currently, with a planned move to Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking, so change is coming. It’s likely that a significant number of roles will disappear and it’s a very worrying time for the workforce and the community as well as the supply chain and contractors. Despite this, their professionalism and passion came across loud and clear.

As such, this opportunity to photograph the site seemed even more important.

I plan to include some of these images in my ‘A Community of Steel’ project, and I was very keen to ensure a human content to the images as well as dramatic imagery of the plant.

You can read more about the project here

Huge thanks to Tata Steel for their assistance in setting up this visit.
