For nearly a year now, I have been working on a self-led personal project - based around documentary photography. It’s a different style and way of working than I’m used to, but the challenge has been fantastic.
My subject is the South Wales town of Port Talbot - renowned for its large steelworks. Traditionally, heavy industries tended to be be closely linked with the local area - workers lived close to their jobs, and communities were built around those industries, economically and socially. My starting point was to explore whether this is still the case - and document it photographically,
So far, I’ve met some amazing people and been welcomed into the community. My aim is to produce a photobook and exhibition, but in the meantime you can read more about the project on a dedicated Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/acommunityofsteel/. The about section goes into more detail about the origins of the project.
