Documenting an Industrial Giant - February 2024

“I first visited the works in Port Talbot back in 2019, however this long planned visit was a return to see things in more detail. The site is enormous and you can only really cover a small part of it in a day, and despite having a shortlist of areas to visit, we only managed about half of it. I knew that some of the areas I was visiting were due to cease operation in the year ahead, so it was a particularly important opportunity to document them.

Both Blast Furnaces and much other associated plant have now been retired, ahead of the construction of an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).

I’m hoping to follow the progress of some of the steelworkers I met as they move on to careers outside of the works.”
